The reset you actually need (after the summer “holidays”)
I am a full-on summer lover. I love the light, the sun, the long days…but most of all I love the feeling of promise, the nostalgia from what summer used to be when I was a kid and I experienced the thrill of freedom from school. Summer was the time I got to be me. I didn’t have to follow the oppressive (and boring) schedule of the school system.
And I’ve never lost that feeling at the beginning of the summer season; that sense of optimism and promise. But here’s the thing I didn’t see so clearly when I was a kid — the adults didn’t get the summer off. And the rude realization I’ve been dodging for years is that now I’m the adult, and it’s a real let down.
So yes, it’s summer, and I’ll take every sunny day and swim in a lake and BBQ I can possibly get, but those things now have to fit in around my job, my household and caregiving responsibilities and my mental load of thinking about all the things, all the time. So that feeling of freedom only comes in fleeting moments. I don’t have the luxury of time, the luxury of leisure, the long stretch to reset before the September structure arrives, and I’m back in “the system”.
That’s why we got so excited about doing a WLI Women’s Leadership Retreat this September. Because the idea that we’re all going to finish up summer refreshed and reset and rested is kind of bullshit for a lot of us. And the truth is we do need a reset, we do need a retreat, and we do need just a few days to worry about nobody but ourselves. Our team at WLI needs it, and we’re guessing some of you do too.
So there’s a space here for you to reclaim a few days of freedom, promise, optimism, vision, camaraderie, spaciousness and time. And I promise you that, as always, retreat is an important part of advance. The act of retreating is preparatory, it’s a regathering of oneself, it’s the step back that allows you to take the leap forward.
We can’t wait to take this deep breath, and we’d love to do that with you, too.
Xo,
Belinda
