Unsubscribe from Tying Up Loose Ends
This week’s Unsubscribe is a tough one: letting go of the compulsion to tie up all the loose ends of life.
If you’re anything like me, you probably have a pretty big list — things to do today, tomorrow, next week, next month… and somehow, no matter how much you check off, every day more stuff always gets added. Life keeps rolling forward.
I tend to hold onto things pretty tight until I consider them to be “done”. The thought of ending a week with everything checked off my list is like this beautiful vision of a clean slate and a clear mind. Ahh. Amazing.
Except it never happens.
I had a blinding flash of the obvious last Friday that if I wait to feel “done” before I let go, I’ll never get there. I’ll never let go. I’ll always be working to tie up the next loose end and the next one before I can rest, and never actually get to the rest part.
So I’m practicing a new kind of boundary: leaving some things unfinished. Leaving the loose ends flapping in the breeze and trusting that they can wait. Not everything needs my attention, and certainly not right away.
I’ll be honest — it’s uncomfortable, and I suck at it. Letting go is not a natural strength of mine. But it’s also kind of freeing. And it’s my reality — I need to be able to let go to be healthy and not live in constant vigilance and endless productivity. My nervous system will thank me.
Here’s my epiphany video:
Let me know if this is a tough one for you too,
Belinda
