Unsubscribe from External Authority About Ourselves

This week, we're diving into something that shows up everywhere—from social media feeds to self-help programs to well-meaning advice: external authority.

It’s time to Unsubscribe from the idea that someone else always knows best when it comes to us and our lives.

Yes, there are experts worth listening to, and true expertise should be respected. And yes, there are times when it makes sense to defer to someone else’s expertise. During the pandemic, I was super clear that I am not an epidemiologist, and therefore I would be following the advice of those who were!

But in many cases our own lived experience, values, sense of what feels right and our own authority on ourselves is an important part of the picture.

We’re often encouraged to defer to influencers, gurus, or the latest “proven” system. But before handing over your trust (and maybe your time, money, and energy), ask:

  • Does this person have true expertise, or simply a well delivered opinion?

  • Does this advice fit my actual life, values, and goals?

  • Does it sound like truth to me?

  • Am I pausing to check in with myself and my own authority, what I know about myself?

Because at the end of the day—you are the expert on you.

Let me know what this brings up for you. I'd love to hear how you're navigating this in your own leadership and life.

Warmly,
Belinda
